Software development at Cerres combines a diverse range of activities throughout all phases of the project life cycle and because of this we look for a range of talents in each of our Developers.
We need to complete projects within agreed timescales and so an organised, focussed approach to work is essential. Since we deliver mission-critical systems to the production line, software reliability is critical to our customer's business and so keen attention to detail is essential to make sure that we deliver quality software that works first time, every time.
All our applications are built around an Oracle DBMS and most have a web based front end, so for all applicants, knowledge of a database and SQL would be useful as would some experience of website development.
In general we recruit Masters Degree graduates in Computer Science or a related discipline and usually expect graduates to have achieved a 2(i) or higher. We also consider graduates from other disciplines who can demonstrate a technical aptitude and a working knowledge of programming, even more so if they can bring valuable soft-skills to the team.
We are also recruiting Software Engineers with full life cycle experience, an expert knowledge of Oracle and who can demonstrate a detailed knowledge of programming in our 'core languages' - PL/SQL, SQL, HTML, Javascript, Java and XML.
In addition to our expertise in specific technologies, our team also has a good breadth of knowledge of current IT technologies. We are looking for Developers who recognise the value in keeping up to date with current technology and the latest trends in IT.
We are especially interested in applications from Software Engineers who can combine experience of system architectures and design with expert core skills and a broad range of technical experience. A professional certification in application development (e.g. Oracle Certified Associate / Professional/ Master, Microsoft Certified Application / Solution Developer etc.) would be a definite advantage.
Software development at Cerres is as much a people-job as a technical one so Developers must have good communications skills. Our team is in daily contact with customers, both by e-mail and telephone and so Developers need to demonstrate effective, articulate and appropriate communication with customers and colleagues.
Our work involves occasional site-visits so it is important that a Developer can present themselves in an engaging and co-operative manner. Site-visits often involve meetings with non-technical people and a Developer must be able to adjust their style of communications according to their audience and focus on requirements rather than solutions.
Effective requirements capture is a large part of our work and requires the ability to communicate on a number of different levels and the skill to elicit the customer's requirements both where explicitly stated, and where implied from business practice.
Ultimately Developers who can establish a good rapport with our customers is a real asset to our business.
Our customers work at the cutting edge of their industries, and we're often required to come up with creative solutions to their new challenges. Our solutions have helped our customers achieve best-in-class performance because our team can think creatively and laterally and suggest solutions which satisfy and often exceed the original requirements.
Things change for our customers: New legislation, improved work practices, new equipment and new technology. We need to be flexible to accommodate changes to specifications, plans and customer's priorities while continuing to deliver work according to spec and within agreed timescales. Sometimes we're asked to solve difficult problems with challenging constraints so a can-do attitude is essential.
Our projects frequently involve working in small teams, in close contact with the customer so Developers must be able to get on with people and work cooperatively. A positive attitude is essential to the business so you need to convey a sense of enthusiasm and interest in your work to both your colleagues and our customers.
We are looking for Graduate Software Developers to join our team. Applicants should be a have achieved a 2(i) degree in Computer Science or a related subject. We are also happy to consider graduates from other degree disciplines who can demonstrate a technical aptitude and a working knowledge of programming. Knowledge of a DBMS and SQL will give your career with us a head-start, and a positive outlook and can-do attitude is essential.

Ultimately Developers who can establish a good rapport with our customers are a real asset to our business.
